Project structure
Work Packages
IDEALTRAIN is structured into four connected work packages covering project coordination, educational methodology, didactic innovation and laboratory-based demonstration.
Work package
WP1
Project Management
Objective: to coordinate, administer and support the overall implementation of the IDEALTRAIN project across the consortium.
WP1 provides the organisational framework for the project and supports its coordinated delivery across all partner institutions.
It ensures that the project is managed consistently, that collaboration between partners remains well structured and that the overall implementation stays aligned with the project plan, timeline and cooperation objectives.
Key responsibilities
- Project coordination across the consortium
- Administrative and organisational management
- Implementation planning and progress monitoring
- Support for communication between partners
- Oversight of the project’s overall delivery
Project contribution
WP1 creates the conditions needed for the other work packages to operate effectively. By supporting coordination, continuity and shared implementation, it helps ensure that educational, methodological and laboratory-based activities can be developed in a coherent project framework.
Its role is not primarily content-oriented, but structural: it keeps the project connected, manageable and operational throughout its duration.
Work package
WP2
Approach to Railway Study
Objective: to define learning outcomes and establish a shared educational approach to railway study in a broader European context.
WP2 focuses on the educational foundations of railway study by clarifying what students are expected to learn and how this learning should be structured.
It supports a more common academic understanding of railway operation and helps move beyond isolated national approaches toward a more coherent European educational perspective.
Learning outcomes
WP2 defines learning outcomes that help make educational expectations clearer for students and academic staff.
Bloom’s taxonomy
It promotes a common approach to railway-specific operational understanding beyond purely national rules and fragmented educational perspectives.
Shared railway study approach
It promotes a common approach to railway-specific operational understanding beyond purely national rules and fragmented educational perspectives.
Work package
WP3
Railway Operation in Didactical Focus
Objective: to develop a common educational approach to railway operation through didactic innovation, updated curricula and practice-oriented teaching.
WP3 focuses on how railway operation is taught in the university environment and how teaching can be updated to reflect modern educational and practical needs.
Educational focus
WP3 develops a stronger common approach to railway operation in the university education environment. It supports teaching that helps students understand railway systems not only as technical structures, but also as operational and organisational realities.
The work package introduces an innovative didactic approach that improves the quality of railway teaching both theoretically and practically. Its aim is to make learning more structured, relevant and better aligned with contemporary engineering education.
WP3 also supports the development of a new transnational course logic in railway operation, including updated research materials, didactic tools and pilot educational activities.
Didactic innovation
WP3 introduces updated teaching approaches that improve the quality of railway engineering education in both theoretical and practical terms.
Curricula and teaching methods
It supports the development of new curricula, learning structures and specific educational methods for railway operation teaching.
Transnational course development
It contributes to a modern lab-focused course programme supported by research materials, didactic tools and pilot lectures.
Work package
WP4
Demonstration of Railway Operation Modules
Objective: to prepare laboratory training modules that reflect current railway skill needs, support interoperability and connect teaching with practical learning.
WP4 focuses on practice-oriented railway education through laboratory modules, applied activities and learning environments that reflect current operational needs.
This work package translates educational goals into practical teaching modules that support direct engagement with railway systems, operational contexts and contemporary laboratory practice.
Its approach is based on learning by doing and on building a stronger understanding of the European railway system through digital competencies and practical interoperability training.
Laboratory training courses
WP4 develops teaching modules that reflect innovative trends in railway transport and the latest practical skill requirements in railway operation.
Learning by doing
The work package supports hands-on learning through practice-oriented activities that help students engage directly with operational and technical realities.
Interoperability in practice
It helps learners understand the European railway system through practical laboratory activities and training supported by digital competencies.
